I'll withdraw the word "subsidized" - This is what we pay taxes for.

Would shutter to imagine NYC without a mass transportation system. There would be no way of moving people to work, play, home. Actually construction of subways stopped with Robert Moses in the thirties who by the fifties headed twelve authorities which answered to no one. The outer boroughs were stranded and starved basically. Light rail, Subways and the Ironically Named Moses were involved with the Brooklyn Dodgers becoming the Los Angeles Dodgers but I digress.

Over the course of my travels and visits to Los Angeles over five decades, "old timers" in the Valley would describe in detail how good the public rail system was - and fast - before the rails themselves were de-railed. There was an excellent piece from 60 Minutes so long ago it was reported by Harry Reasoner and detailed the why's & wherefores and complicity of Standard Oil, Goodyear & Kinney - they were into parking then - and the subsequent trial which they were found the CEO's guilty of collusion, et al. They were fined $1. Each. Fixxed their wagon. (I imagine the segment could be found on CBS/Paramount Plus - a Mountain of Entertainment.)

But like New York, building transportation then would be exponentially less expensive compared to present day. And in LA, the groundwork was already there.

Re: Why is Los Angeles disliked by so many people?

You sound like a phony Angeleno. A year is more than enough to figure things out. Endless homeless tents, illegal towing or ticketing practices, corruption, crime, gangs, prostitutions, filth, unaffordable rent, high taxes, expensive gas, rude people, meaningless "friendships." People simply don't give a shit about each other, and that's not only my opinion. "Weeding out the weak." More like, the smart leave to better the quality of their lives. There's a reason everyone has a dog in LA. It's a mean city because the bureaucracy is mean and it turns the citizens into mean and heartless individuals. I truly blame the local uncaring government for all of the "meanness." The weather sucks, horrible smog which eats at your lungs, warm septic rain at times, hot winds causing terrible fires, antiquated highway system and local roads are weathered and dangerous to maneuver. People tend to live behind tall gates and rarely venture out. They are angry. Don't move to Los Angeles the city of the mean!

Re: LA’s original subway

You are so right! As a child I lived on Long Beach Avenue, a stone's throw from the legendary Central Avenue. The streetcar line ran right in front of our street. The streetcar was the main mode of transportation for thousands upon thousands of commuters; especially black domestics who commuted to the white affluent areas of LA to work on a daily basis. With this public mode of transportation working well for so many citizens...
who were not entertaining buying the cars that most common poor working people could not afford in the first place......so they forced people to buy cars so that they could move around the city by eliminating that very viable public transportation system.

Re: The best way to see the Hollywood sign

You are awesome!
